In the near future, the question of succession means having to make a decision that will fundamentally influence and change the company’s future. However, many entrepreneurial families struggle with their own offspring when it comes to company succession. This realization hurts – especially when the younger generation has been involved in the company from an early age and has already held several positions. Many questions arise – will the offspring manage it and is he willing to take over the company? Does the daughter or son embody entrepreneurship? Does she or he have the bite?

Making this decision is not easy for most. Many factors play a role in finding a solution – but the emotions will hardly be ignored. Nevertheless, a fact-based future solution must be found – for the good of the company. An external solution can therefore also come to the fore. In this case, it is advisable to bring an external consultant on board to support the succession process on an objective level. External consultants impress with their, usually, relevant experience in the succession environment. They have often already come into contact with various succession cases and have therefore already experienced one or the other special situation.

The entrepreneur should approach his succession early and well planned. This is the only way to avoid a hasty and forced decision. Postponing one’s own succession can have very negative consequences. A large proportion of stakeholders prefer a successfully implemented company succession. A sudden accident or, in the worst case, the death of the owner can have unforeseen consequences – both for the family and for the workforce.

Therefore, inform yourself in good time and conscientiously. A consistent planning and implementation of your project should be in the foreground. For this purpose, it is recommended to ask yourself some questions:

  • Clearly present and evaluate the current initial situation
  • Define requirements for the successor
  • Fixed schedule including assumption of content responsibility
  • Reconcile company and shareholder interests…
